Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets Taschenbuch – 3. Mai 2007
Kaufoptionen und Plus-Produkte
Everyone wants to succeed in life. But what causes some of us to be more successful than others? Is it really down to skill and strategy - or something altogether more unpredictable?
This book is the bestselling sensation that will change the way you think about business and the world. It is all about luck: more precisely, how we perceive luck in our personal and professional experiences. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the markets - we hear an entrepreneur has 'vision' or a trader is 'talented', but all too often their performance is down to chance rather than skill. It is only because we fail to understand probability that we continue to believe events are non-random, finding reasons where none exist.

'An iconoclastic tour de force ... nothing escapes his Exocets' Evening Standard

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Nassim Nicholas Taleb spent twenty-one years as a risk taker before becoming a researcher in philosophical, mathematical, and (mostly) practical problems with probability. Although he spends most of his time as a flâneur, meditating in cafes across the planet, he is currently Distinguished Professor at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering but self-funds his own research.
His books, Antifragile, The Black Swan, The Bed of Procrustes and Fooled by Randomness (part of a multi-volume collection called Incerto, Latin for uncertainty), have been translated into thirty-seven languages. Taleb has authored more than fifty scholarly papers as backup to Incerto, ranging from international affairs and risk management to statistical physics. He refuses all awards and honours as they debase knowledge by turning it into competitive sports.

Ungewissheit), bestehend aus "Glücklichen Narren" ("Fooled by Randomness"), "Der Schwarze Schwan" ("The Black Swan") und "Antifragilität" ("Antifragility").

April 2024In Nassim Nicholas Taleb's "Fooled by Randomness," readers are taken on a fascinating journey through the intricate world of randomness and human decision-making. Taleb, a renowned statistician and former trader, challenges conventional wisdom and exposes the fallacies that often lead us astray.
One of the book's greatest strengths lies in Taleb's ability to blend complex ideas with engaging storytelling. Through anecdotes and examples, he illustrates how randomness influences our lives in ways we often overlook. Whether it's in financial markets, career success, or everyday choices, Taleb demonstrates how randomness plays a far more significant role than we realize.
Moreover, Taleb's insights are not just theoretical musings; they have practical implications for how we approach risk and uncertainty. By embracing the unpredictability of the world, readers can learn to navigate uncertainty with more humility and resilience.
What sets "Fooled by Randomness" apart is its refreshing honesty. Taleb doesn't claim to have all the answers, but he encourages readers to question assumptions and think critically about the world around them. In doing so, he empowers us to become more discerning in our decision-making and less susceptible to the pitfalls of randomness.
Overall, "Fooled by Randomness" is a thought-provoking and enlightening read that challenges readers to reconsider their understanding of success, failure, and the role of randomness in our lives. Whether you're a seasoned investor, a curious thinker, or simply someone interested in exploring the mysteries of chance, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

- Bewertet in Deutschland am 17. August 2023Potentially life-changing book as it highlights the role of randomness in everyday life.
Basically, the book is about the importance of randomness in our everyday lives and how we don't perceive it. The book shows through numerous examples and little stories how randomness shapes events, which we usually don't attribute to chance. The book manages to change your intuition about a lot of topics with regard to success and failure and makes you a bit more humble in the moments of success and less full of despair in times of distress.
The book might be a bit too long to get the point across but all in all it is very worthwhile and entertaining read, especially if you enjoy Taleb's humour. If you have enjoyed Taleb's other work, this is a must read.
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 20. Januar 2022One of the best books I have ever read. If you'd like to learn more how luck is underestimated in our life, then this is a must read. We often hear all those great stories about success of Buffet's, and Gate's plus 10 magic components to become reach or successful...well, take it with a grain of salt. Nassim Taleb explains in this book how we are flawed and biased. Our brain works the way it works (for that I recommend to read Thinking Fast and Slow) and we should get up every day from our bad and tell ourselves that we don't understand a thing and start asking questions to find out what is right and wrong. I hope this helps. Enjoy reading it!
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 2. September 2010This book is admirable in its courage to address the subject of uncertainty and coincidence and its willingness to stand up to it. It is one of a kind in that it can help you cultivate and indulge in an attitude of critical thinking, in a strive for maturity. But I would caution you to contemplate that it likes a certain attitude of black and white, of simple pro and contra. Also, it uses cliché, that is long standing relatively simple ideas of popular knowledge. I am aware, that many well educated people do that too, but that is not the point here. The perhaps too weighty power of the books standpoint in my opinion comes from the fact that it jumps to and fro from generalities to special cases in a very free, actually even in a selfindulgent way. To my mind, it is a bit too obliquious to the fact that the people it critisizes are often very intelligent, experts in their field with a history of many years weighing different ideas against each other and prioritising them. Of course, such people can be selfindulgent too, of course they can at times take advantage of others, that are less knowledgable and less versatile in their thinking, by presenting false ideas of certainties and securities. But they do not always do it, or as a general rule. They do not routinely lose their way. My point of criticism is, that this book is a bit too arrogant in the absoluteness of its comments. My advice to you then would be to read it, to teach yourself to think critically, to learn to recognise certain patterns while staying acutely aware of the fact, that nobody knows everything, that the possibility of mistakes is always there and that luck does play a certain role in life, according to the laws of statistics and probability, that therefore one must be aware, perhaps, that complete certainty is rarely a healthy option and reeks of blunder. However, my advise would also be, to not take this book too seriously, for the reasons given above. Read other books too, eg "How Markets Fail", for a more detailed history of economics. Onesidedness lurks everywhere, even in being conscious of uncertainties. One needs to remind oneself of that from time to time, to retain a healthy balance between determinism and the idea of complete chaos, to be your own best friend. Comment such as this must needs be imperfect, respecting uncertainties, but I do have a point that is worth contemplation, I think. And to the author: Please note that these comments are not anonymous. And another point still: We like control, all of us, embracing uncertainty too emphatically will strengthen ideas of controllism, simply by the fact that it strays to one side of life in too extreme a way. A combination of care and courage may be the best option to prevent controllism from evolving with too much freedom, or doubt with too much power (remember Shakespeare "Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by failing to attempt"). Be critical, not overly critical.
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 18. Juli 2020Classic, must read. Please don’t work on economy/ business without having read that book. To me, Taleb is in icon in his science and a crazy talented author. Must must must read. Although it might take you some time to get through because it’s so Information dense.
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 12. April 2020I don’t understand why this book has some reviews with less than 5 stars, its an absolute must read. Nassim gives you a lot different perspectives, food for thought and interesting anecdotes. You‘ll perceive the world differently after reading this book...

5,0 von 5 Sternen A Slow Read, Richly Rewarding
The language is dense — unmistakably that of a true scientist — but it's rich with insight. Gems are scattered throughout the text, waiting to be discovered. I recommend reading it slowly, pausing often to reflect or highlight the subtle points you might otherwise miss. I’m already on a second pass, marking ideas I overlooked the first time. I’m especially glad the author didn’t simplify the language at an editor’s suggestion — that would’ve stripped the book of its distinctive voice and the unique pleasure of slow, thoughtful reading.

5,0 von 5 Sternen One of the most remarkable books I have read.
This book is an eye-opener, and I don't use this term loosely. Randomness around us is ubiquitous. But we, the humans, have developed elaborate methods to ignore it. We read messages when there are none. We fear unexpected developments when they are just regular randomness, and we fool ourselves with elaborate models and unfounded confidence when we are not more than rather dull and un-introspective species only with modicum of awareness and intelligence.
This book is so good that my only regret is that I didn't read it 15 years ago when the book first came out. This book will change my life. It has already affected me on how I view the world around me. I believe every person, whether they are specifically in the risk-taking business, or generally living life (life after all is a risk-taking business), will benefit from the insights Nassim provides in the excellent 262 pages.
